step on the paved lawn, and leave some Kraft dinner for me.
Guinea Pigs on the Internet.
They may not be as much of a
threat as the chickens, but there are some out there... The

Stillwater
(MN)--my hometown--is getting into the movies these days..!
(map)
Beautiful Girls:
A good movie and lots of Stillwater in it, though in the
plotline it seems to be supposed to be some kind of suburb
of Boston. It darn well looks like Minnesota to me. It's
about a guy (Timothy Hutton
looking a little bit like Jim Thirlwell) going home for his
high school reunion. There's not really that much of a plot.
I bought my first guitar at Water Music, which you can see
plainly in the early scene where the guy arrives home, and
my sister's wedding reception was in the red brick courthouse
up on the hill shown prominently partway through the movie.
Grumpier Old Men:
The scene where Melanie and Jacob argue during the Oktoberfest
polka thing by the river is the (quite distinctive) park in downtown
Stillwater, including the bridge that the kids in The Cure go under.
The Cure:
Lots of good scenes of Stillwater, and shot right near my
house..! Our family car is in it (the beige Volvo station wagon seen across
the street just after the kids jettison their grocery cart after riding
it down 2nd street toward the Lowell Inn, where I used to work). The
school they come out of at the beginning is Washington School, which
served as our auxiliary high school building when I was a sophomore.
Fargo:
This one wasn't filmed in Stillwater, just Minnesota. Good movie,
though. Not everyone in Minnesota has an accent quite that bad,
incidentally.
